Ukraine International Law Response
The British Institute of International and Comparative Law (BIICL) has created a new Ukraine International Law Response initiative to respond to multiple international law challenges that the Russian invasion of Ukraine poses. Our scholars work on a broad range of international law legal matters, including issues of state responsibility, displaced persons, cultural heritage, business and human rights, laws of war and other topics.
Our team members have regional expertise in the area and can work in Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian languages to get information from primary sources. We have experience of working in the region, including through implementation of research and capacity-building projects. Please get in touch with individual researchers for comments or to discuss possible cooperation.
Researchers at Risk
BIICL is delighted to welcome Ukrainian academics fleeing the war in Ukraine, through the Researchers at Risk Fellowship Programme. The programme was launched by the British Academy with support from the Academy of Medical Sciences, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society and CARA - the Council for At-Risk Academics.
BIICL will provide an enabling and supportive academic environment to further the researchers work in areas such as international humanitarian law, war crimes and human rights amongst others. Their work will complement our existing Ukraine International Law response initiative, set up with the aim of bringing together scholars working on international legal matters to respond to the multiple international law challenges posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Short Course: War in Ukraine in Context: History, Politics and Law
The course offers interdisciplinary overview of prerequisites, current trends and future scenarios of the War in Ukraine. The course will enable participants to understand the reasons of the conflict and to find political and legal solutions to combat its consequences and to restore trust in international law and justice. Over the course of five sessions, participants will gain knowledge about the history of Ukraine as an independent nation, understand the foundations of the political and legal systems of Ukraine since 1991, its relations with the international community including the UK, EU, NATO and Russia, character of warfare from perspective of international law and its consequences for international legal order.
